S1000-class submarines

S1000 -Class is the name of a class of conventional submarines with air-independent propulsion, which is currently being developed by Russian Rubin Design Bureau and of the Italian Fincantieri in a community project.

Development

After lengthy negotiations, the two shipyards began in 2004 with the project for a class cost effective, about 1000 tons of displacing diesel-electric boats that can also operate independently of external air by means of fuel cells. This is a revised version of the Russian Project 1650 Amur. This mainly intended for export boats were presented at the arms fair Euronaval in France in 2006 and 2008. In addition to her role as a hunting submarines they are intended primarily to educate and to support special forces. Interest in the boats have the armed forces of Italy and India shown.
