The Saab 900 I was presented in September 1978 as an evolution of the Saab 99.

While the front end and cockpit were completely redesigned and the wheelbase lengthened, Saab - typical details as The spa located between the front seats ignition, self-repairing bumpers were ( move at impact velocities up to 7 km / h in the original shape ) or the driver's seat heater maintained. Also, the 2 -liter engine with turbocharger was taken over by 99. In addition, carburettor and injection engines were still available. Overall, high active and passive safety, innovative technical solutions and unique design were prominent features.

To the start of production in the summer of 1978, he was initially sold only as a hatchback saloon. In the spring of 1980, the sedan called notchback sedan was added. Technical feature was the longitudinally mounted engine with front drive. The transmission was sitting under the 45 ° inclined to the right built-in motor and was driven by a roller chain.

The model vintages 1979 and 1980 were very different from the later models. To receive details such as gear knob, glove box lid, seats and covers, mirrors, door and trunk moldings, trims, steering wheel, center console, seat belt buckles, bumpers, ventilation grids for model year '81 a new design. The impressive tailgate, which was first adopted by the 99, has already been revised a year earlier; so she got a smaller outside handle and rear lights. The tail so now had two taillights pairs.

The most important difference with the engines: The model year courses 1979/1980 still had the so-called B- motor, which, however, suffered from frequent childhood diseases such as broken water pumps and Zündverteilerwellen. The H- engine, built from model year '81, was now easier, the water pump is no longer integrated into the engine block and the distributor was driven directly by the overhead camshaft. The first two years of the classic 900 are virtually impossible to find, and therefore now sought-after collectibles in Germany.

In the summer of 1982, the APC system (automatic performance control) was introduced at the turbos. This device consists essentially of the knock sensor, the controller and the solenoid valve consisting adjusts the boost pressure on the respective type of fuel. Now also gasoline with lower octane could be refueled without thereby damage to the engine were to be feared. In the B engine, however, the charge pressure control was still through the exhaust back pressure; Moreover, this engine could be operated with high octane gasoline.

In the fall of 1983, the DOHC engine was introduced with four-valve technology. This produced a maximum torque of 273 Nm at 3000 rpm. and made 175 (later in the G- Kat - version 160 hp). This variant have from the outset on a charge air cooling; the 8- valve turbos (which were still produced in parallel) they received only two years later.

Facelift

In late summer 1986, the Saab 900 was subjected to a further model refinement and received an aerodynamically sloped front end and wider bumpers. In the same year, the 900 Convertible appeared initially (albeit in very small numbers ). Using the old front straight

In autumn 1987 the 900 technically revised again. The handbrake now seemed to the rear wheels, as there was another hole circle. In addition, ABS was now optional.

With the takeover by General Motors saw the first technical interventions with the engines of the 900 I. In addition to the established full- Turbo with 160 hp, the volume model 900 S was created, which had to make do without charge air cooling and with a shorter primary translation without the aforementioned APC (Soft Turbo ). This model variant was cheaper, but with 141 hp only slightly weaker than the full turbo and therefore achieved good sales figures.

Three years after the takeover by General Motors successful, but not more profitable model 900 I was terminated and replaced by a successor of the same name, but fundamentally stood out due to the underbody of the used Opel Vectra technically and visually from its predecessor.

From a total of 900 908 810 copies were made . The hatchback ran until the end of 1993 from the band, while the convertible was in production until mid-1994.

The second 900 was when it first appeared in the summer of 1993, the first mass under the direction of General Motors Saab model. It came in the production of many parts from other GM models are used, for example, large portions of the underbody of the Opel Vectra A.

Even with the engine variants, there was next to the Saab - typical four-cylinder (with and without turbocharging ) is also a V6 engine from the Opel program, which but poorly sold because it was perceived by the customer as a " Saab - typical ". The buyer could also choose here between the models, the " S" and " SE". From summer 1994, the Saab 900 II was offered as a convertible.

From 900 II 273 568 copies were made .

Successor was the Saab 9-3, the introduction took place in early 1998 and was provided due to reliability problems of its predecessor with a total of 450 new components.
