Saadani-Nationalpark

The Saadani National Park, near the village of Saadani is Tanzania's only national park on the coast. The 1100 km ² large park protects unique coastal savannas, mangroves and primary coastal forests along the Wami River and important turtle nesting sites.

History

The beginnings of the National Park are located in a wildlife park founded in 1964 with an area of ​​approximately 250 km ². The boundaries of this park were the Mligaji River to the north, the Wami River in the south and the railway line to Moshi in the West. In 2003, the park was expanded and elevated to the National Park. It now includes areas north of Mligaji River, which are particularly important for the protection of elephants and sable antelope.

The headquarters of the new national park is the Mkwaja Ranch.

Location and Directions

The park is located about 130 km from Dar es Salaam; he is so similar to far from Dar es Salaam as the Mikumi National Park. The journey by car between Dar es Salaam and the park currently takes about 4:30 hours. After currently taking place development of coastal roads, the journey time will be about two hours. The park may include giraffe, buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, sable antelope, eland, hartebeest, wildebeest, zebras, water buffalo, reedbuck, kudu, warthog, hyena, mongoose, civet, serval, baboon, black and white colobus monkeys, crocodiles, hippos, three types of duikers as well as various birds can be observed.

Particularly interesting are trees, which are called because of their up to 2 m high stilt roots as " Wandering palm trees ".

In the areas adjacent to the park waters temporarily dolphins and whales can be seen on their migration. In the nearby Madete Marine Reserve Green Sea turtles are protected.
