Sabinianus (consul 505)

Sabinianus was an East Roman general of the 5th and 6th centuries after Christ's birth. He was the son of coming from humble Magister militum per Illyricum Sabinianus Magnus, the Emperor Zeno in 481 had them executed.

Life

Despite the fate of his father Sabinianus made as an officer in the East Roman army career. He got in fights Ostrom against the encroaching "barbarians" ( Germans, Huns and Bulgarians ), which had invaded the Roman Danube provinces, quickly to magister militum per Illyricum and gained thereby the same position occupied his father before him had. Other late antique authors refer to its title, however, different, as Marcellinus, who calls him ductor militiae or dux at Ennodius while Jordanes the Gothic history it expressly referred to as magister militum per Illyricum, the usual in the Eastern Roman army official commander title in a major theater of war. Since Sabinianus was the supreme commander of the Roman troops in the Danube provinces, and over against the Danube and Sava invading hordes of Mundo consisting of Goths, Huns and Heruli fought, the title of magister militum is probably likely. This Mundo had the Ostrogothic commanders Pitzia who had the Great defeats the Gepids for his king Theodoric connected. Since this gothic, reinforced by Mundos droves army set fire to Illyricum, Sabinianus attacked the Gothic army. In a great battle at Margum in the plain between the Danube and Morava (505 ), the Eastern Roman troops, who had been reinforced by 10 000 Bulgarians defeated. Sabinianus had to withdraw with the remnants of his troops in the fortified castle NATO. Cassiodorus speaks in his chronicle for the year 504 (though the battle took place 505 ) of victis Bulgaribus, Ennodius of exterminatis. Whatever the case, if only the Bulgarian contingent or, as in Ennodius the whole army was destroyed, the result of this battle was the end of Roman rule in Illyricum and the task of the Danube-Sava border.

Regardless of the military events Sabinianus was consul in the year 505 for the eastern part of the Roman Empire, while Flavius Theodorus Consul of the western part was.
