Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro

Sablayan is a Filipino community on the west coast of Mindoro, halfway between the southern and north-western tip.

The name comes from an old Visayan term and means so much " where hit the waves ". In sailing ship days this was a place you visited during bad weather. The seaside town has 76 153 inhabitants (as of 1 May 2010), who live mainly on agriculture and fishing. A small cargo port provides increasingly for growth in the remote area. Sablayan is the starting point for trips to the dive island Pandan Iceland and the world famous Apo Reef. This is a small tourism sector has developed, which, however, hardly increases.

Inland lies the Mount Iglit Baco National Park and along the northeastern border with the municipality of Naujan is the 2582 meter high Mount Halcon. In the village there is a campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
