Saborios

Saborios († 668 ) was a Byzantine ostömisch - general and usurper.

Saborios was perhaps of Persian origin: His name is apparently a Greek version of the Persian name Shapur, and Theophanes (AM 6159 ) explicitly calls him " of Persian origin " ( Περσογενής ), although it is usually viewed in modern research as Armenians or Persarmenier. Depending on how you ὁ τῶν Ἀρμενιάκων στρατηγός understands the expression in Theophanes, acted Saborios either yet. Than magister militum per Armeniam or already as strategos of the theme Armeniakon 667 he rebelled against Emperor Constans II in any case, who was at that time in Sicily. The sources report in some detail about this event. It is assumed, that have used in this context Theophanes, Agapios of Hierapolis and several Syrian- Christian chroniclers to a common main source, it has apparently traded to the now lost chronicle of Theophilus of Edessa.

Saborios negotiated by his agent Sergios with the Caliph Mu ʿ āwiya I. Sergios met here on Kalifenhof Andreas on, an imperial ambassador. Mu ʿ āwiya finally promised Saborios military support against Constans II However, before it came to decisive combat operations, died Saborios. He left with his army Melitene and made their way to Constantinople Opel, when he was killed in a riding accident. The rebellion broke then together. The Arab troops intervened no longer effective, although the Caliph was able to benefit from the turmoil in the kingdom shortly. The Arabs conquered Amorion, but that could be recaptured shortly afterwards by the Andreas mentioned in the coup; before Andrew had apparently also arranges the death of Sergio.
