Sabrina (1954 film)

Sabrina is the title of a film version of the play Sabrina ( Sabrina Fair) by Samuel A. Taylor from 1954, directed by Billy Wilder.

Action

Linus and David Larrabee are the sons of a wealthy family on Long Iceland. Linus, the older, is completely absorbed in his work. He is busy trying to run the family business, and has no time for a wife or their own family. David is a bon vivant who is officially employed in the family business, but does not make much out of work. He has been married three times and leaves no social event. Sabrina Fairchild, the young, shy, and awkward daughter of the chauffeur of the family is already in love from childhood in David, who she hardly noticed. She goes to Paris, where a completed apprenticeship as a cook and learns through his friendship with an elderly French baron know the manners of high society. As an elegant, sophisticated and beautiful woman, she returns after two years, where she promptly David stands out, which makes it without delay of the court.

For business considerations would, however, like Linus David marry the daughter of a sugar factory. To keep them away from David, the inveterate bachelor Linus to go out with the fun-loving Sabrina overcomes. He plays her claim to have fallen in love with them and return together to Paris with her want to. Only a few days before leaving he tells her the truth and lets David take his place with Sabrina to France. This has, however, noticed that Linus has now developed feelings for the young woman and would not be the happiness of the two in the way. He can persuade his brother, her nachzureisen, so Sabrina and Linus finally travel together to Paris.

Background

Humphrey Bogart was used at the last minute for Cary Grant, as his refusal. Bogart and William Holden could not stand each other, as Bogart said that Holden would be a bad actor. Bogart disapproved of the use of Audrey Hepburn ( he would have preferred his wife Lauren Bacall in the role ), while Holden fell in love with it. Bogart received as salary $ 300,000 Holden earned $ 150,000 and Hepburn only $ 15,000.

Although Edith Head won an Oscar for Best Costume Design, were the most parts of Hepburn's wardrobe by Hubert de Givenchy. In fact, Hepburn wore their own clothes from the Givenchy collection. It was the first time she worked with the French fashion designer. Almost throughout their career, she was endowed by him.

It was the second film in a row, in which she wore her hair short as a symbol of maturity. The first movie was a heart and a crown in 1953. It was also the first of four films in a row, in which she played a role in which she was connected romantically with a man who was old enough to be her father.

Hepburn and Holden fell in love during the filming each other, but Hepburn broke off the relationship when she found out that she had no children with Holden can get.

As with Sunset Boulevard (1950 ), the film began production without a finished script. Ernest Lehman worked with Billy Wilder continued during production on the book. One day, when Lehman had no extra copy of the upcoming scene for Bogart, exploded this. Wilder explained to the assembled crew that he would turn no more feet of film, until Bogart would have apologized to Lehman. Bogart invited Lehman in his wardrobe and the rotation was finally continued.

During production, Wilder worked continuously on the book. One day he asked Hepburn to do so, as if she could not text her for a scene; they should throw the scene said so many times, so there was enough time to write the next scene for the reception the next day ready. Bogart, who was not informed, answered, therefore, on the question of how he thought of working with Hepburn. " She's all right, if you do not mind a dozen takes" ' ( "It's okay if it you do not mind, the same scene a dozen times to turn ").

Remakes

The play by Samuel A. Taylor was after the Wilder film version yet adapted several times for film and television. Of these versions best known being the 1995 remake is formed under the same title by Sydney Pollack.
