Sacha Guitry, actually Alexandre Pierre Georges Guitry, (born 9 Februarjul / 21 February 1885greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † July 24, 1957 in Paris) was a French actor, film director, screenwriter and playwright.

Life

Sacha Guitry came in 1885 as the son of the then famous French actor Lucien Guitry ( 1860-1925 ) and actress Renée de Pontry ( 1858-1902 ) in Saint Petersburg to the world. Born into a theatrical family, Sacha Guitry was already at the age of five years on the stage. When he was 16 years old, has been performed with Le Page for the first time one of his self-written pieces. In 1918, he began also to produce his plays and stage. In his work as an author him the writer Jules Renard and Octave Mirbeau were as mentors.

Already during the 1920s, Guitry wrote screenplays for silent films. From 1935, he regularly worked as a film director - starting with the biopic Pasteur, in which he not only took over the title role, but beside Fernand Rivers also co-directed. Very interested in history, Guitry turned preferred biopics and historical films such as The Pearls of the Crown (1937, co-directed by Christian - Jaque ) and one of his biggest screen successes Versailles - Kings and Women (1954). However, he also realized light entertainment films like My father was right (1936). Known for his biting wit, he provided his superficially cheerful films such as The Brute (1951 ) with socio-critical undertones. He was always seen in his films in a leading role.

Throughout his life Guitry wrote 124 stage plays, and numerous newspaper articles, poems, essays and more than 50 screenplays. In his works, he often took over the lead role on the stage. With a total of five wives, including Yvonne Printemps, he stood on stage regularly. Among his close friends were Jean Cocteau, Tristan Bernard and Claude Monet.
