Sächsische Weltchronik

The Saxon Chronicle (SW ) is the first German -language chronicle in prose. It has been drafted in Middle High and Middle Low German language. Unlike other chronicles of the time, it is written in prose instead of in rhyme. The time of origin is unclear; the proposals of the research phases ranging from 1225-1229 to 1260-1275. The figure is three differing reviews ( called A, B and C).

Author

It was written probably in the area of the archbishopric of Magdeburg. Long it was regarded as the work of Eikes Repgow, the author of the Sachsenspiegel. This write-up is now no longer as valid. She was suspected because of a quote in the rhyme preface to the Chronicle: " daz is the van Repegouwe rat".

Content

The software tells the story of the world after. Beginning with the creation of the world by God, the chronicler goes smoothly from the history of Rome, and then to strengthen reporting the events in the first Frankish, then Holy Roman Empire. Your end is the Chronicle during the reign Frederick II, which corresponds to the presence of the chroniclers. Depending on the manuscript are included sequels. In contrast to the Verschroniken this time ( see Rudolf von Ems, the Christian Herre Chronicle or Jans of Enikel ) she shows little interest in biblical narrative open and remains almost sober - annalistisch in their sockets A and B, which is not atypical for the type of world history is.

Tradition

The Saxon Chronicle survives in over 50 manuscripts and fragments and was repeatedly provided with sequels.
