Sacra di San Michele

The Sacra di San Michele ( German, Sanctuary of St. Michael ') was a Benedictine Monastery in Susa Valley, in the northern Italian region of Piedmont.

Geography

She lies on the Monte Pirchiriano ( 962 m asl ) at the eastern exit of the Susa valley between the villages of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino and Chiusa di San Michele, about 35 km west of Turin. With its exposed location and castle-like construction, the Monastery is reminiscent of other medieval churches and monasteries Michael, about to Mont -Saint -Michel in Normandy, or St. Michael 's Mount in Cornwall.

History

The abbey was founded in 983 by Count Hugo von Montboissier and existed until 1622, when it. According to their decline by Pope Gregory XV was lifted. Today this building is a symbol of Piedmont; it is now occupied and managed by the Order of Rosminians.
