Sadik Hakim

Sadik Hakim ( born July 15, 1919 in Duluth (Minnesota ) and Argonne Dense Thornton, † June 20, 1983 in New York City ) was an American jazz pianist and composer of bebop.

Life and work

His musical education learned Argonne Thornton from his grandfather, who was a music teacher. He came in 1940 to New York City, played until 1946 with Ben Webster, from 1946 to 1948 with Lester Young ( " I'm Confessin ' ," " No Eyes Blues", 1947) and Slam Stewart. 1945 he took part in the legendary " Koko " session (The Story Charlie Parker ) by Charlie Parker. He also recorded with Buddy Tate and Dexter Gordon on plates. He was involved in the 1947 composition by Thelonious Monk piece " Eronel ". Thornton is also regarded as the actual composer of Lester Young's success number " Jumpin 'With Symphony Sid ".

1947 Thornton converted to Islam, changed his name to Sadik Hakim and now came mainly under that name on. In 1949 he went to Montreal ( Canada ) and played in the local bebop scene. Because of a drugs-related offense he had to leave Canada in 1950. In New York he worked in the 1950s with James Moody, Sonny Rollins and Buddy Tate. From 1966 to 1976, Hakim returned to Montreal, where I had my own band, radio and TV appearances and took on plates with Charlie Biddle and Sonny Stitt. For the funeral of Thelonious Monk in 1982, he played his composition " 'Round Midnight "; he died the following year.
