Safar

Safar (Arabic صفر, DMG Safar ) is the second month of the Islamic calendar and as such follows the month of Muharram. The Safar in turn follows the Rabi ʿ al - Auwal.

Importance

On the significance of the month name, there are two theories: One states that the name so can be derived from ṣufār ( " yellow "); in the period when the calendar was a solar calendar, the leaves were turning yellow in Safar. The other theory is derived Safar of sIFR ( "null, void " ) from; after Muharram, at war prohibition, the houses were abandoned and their inhabitants along the way to the battlefield.

Before Islam, the Safar was a double month, which consisted of the present-day months of Muharram and Safar. At that time, the second part of the double month, today Safar, Safar II as referred to together as the two months as- Safarani; the first half of the year thus consisted of three double months Safar, Rabi ʿ and Dschumada.

In India, the month is known as Terah Tezi ( " Thirteen " ), this term refers to the 13th day of the month in which the last illness of the Prophet Mohammed is said to have broken. On the last Wednesday of Safar this illness is said to have improved again. On the 20th day of Safar commit the Shiites Arba'in hard.

The Safar is considered bad luck month, so to have died from the 12,400 prophets before Muhammad 12,000 this month, according to popular belief. The month of first - and eighteenth apply to some as negative days. According to a pun no travel ( سفرة, DMG safra ) is to be undertaken in Safar.

Safar is rare as a first name in use.
