The University Saga (Japanese佐贺 大学, Saga daigaku ) is a national university in Japan. The main campus is located in Saga, Saga Prefecture.

History

The (older) Saga University was founded in 1949 by the merger of three state schools. The three were:

  • High school saga (佐贺 高等学校, Saga Kōtō Gakko, founded in 1920 ),
  • The Normal School Saga (佐贺 师范学校, Saga shihan Gakko, founded in 1884 ), and
  • Youth Normal School Saga (佐贺 青年 师范学校, Saga his shihan Gakko, founded in 1925 ).

The University has used the former seat of the high school saga as the main campus ( Honjō - campus) since inception. It was opened with two faculties: humanities and natural sciences, and education. The Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences was divided into four faculties: Agricultural Science (1955), Economics ( 1966), Natural and Engineering Sciences ( ditto), and Liberal Arts ( ditto). In 1996 the Faculties of Education and Liberal Arts were merged into one Faculty: Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Education.

2003, the (older) Saga University was with the Medical University Saga (佐贺 医科大学, Saga ika daigaku, founded in 1976 ) merged to form the new University saga.
