Sagarejo

Sagarejo (Georgian საგარეჯო ) is a city in eastern Georgia, in the Kakheti region. It is the administrative seat of the homonymous municipality and has about 11,500 inhabitants Sagarejo ( 2009).

Location

Sagarejo is just 50 kilometers due east of the state capital Tbilisi and 25 kilometers southwest of the regional capital Telavi on the southwestern foot of the Gombori mountain train (Georgian გომბორის ქედი, Gomboris Kedi ), which runs through Kakheti and between the wide valley of the Alazani in the Northeast and the extending south-west, through which the medium Iori Iori plateau -like mountain separates. About ten kilometers north of Sagarejo reached the Gombori - mountain range with the Ziwi its greatest height of 1991 m. From the left bank of the Iori the city center is about four kilometers away.

In the municipality the population share of Azerbaijanis with 31.9% is relatively high.

History

The place was first mentioned in the 11th century under the name Twali and is traditionally the main town of the historic area Außerkachetien (Gare Kakheti ) viewed. Later he became one of the more southern Georgian Orthodox monastery Dawit Gareja, whereupon he received the present name (such as " of Gareja ").

In the Soviet period was Sagarejo administrative center of the same name Rajons with the status of Selo, before 1962, the town rights.

Culture and sights

In Sagarejo as the seat of one of the eparchies of the Georgian Orthodox Church of the Apostles, there are several old churches. The city has a museum of local history.

From the town leads a twelve- kilometer long, winding road to the situated in more than 1600 m altitude recreational and health resort Koda (also Ziwi - Koda ).

Economy and infrastructure

In Sagarejo there are companies in the food industry ( wine, canned food, dairy products) and the building materials industry.

The city is located on the 1915 and opened on this section in 1964 electrified with 3000 V DC railway line from Tbilisi to Telavi ( kilometer 48; station in a district of four kilometers southeast of the city center ). South Sagarejo is bypassed by the Interstate 5 south, which connects Tbilisi continue on Znori with the Azerbaijani border in Lagodechi.
