Sage (mathematics software)

Sage is a free computer algebra system for Linux and Mac OS X. The first version was in 2005 by William A. Stein, a mathematician at the University of Washington published. Sage combines the strengths of many often highly specialized computer algebra systems and numerical libraries that are shipped with Sage, by providing uniform interfaces to these. Some of the most important are listed in the table below.

In addition, interfaces are proprietary mathematical software such as Mathematica or Maple, available. But Sage also offers custom functionality, such as an implementation of modular forms.

Sage can be used in several ways:

  • Through an interactive, based on IPython console
  • A graphical user interface that runs in a web browser. This can be created and edited comparable with those of Maple ' Worksheets '. These can also be integrated into LaTeX.
  • By writing programs in Sage
  • By writing Python scripts that use the Sage libraries

The software has been in the global competition for Les Trophée du Libre Open Source Software scientifiques (scientific software) and in 2013 awarded the first prize in the category Logiciels with the SIGSAM Jenks Prize of the ACM, 2007.
