Saguache County, Colorado
The Saguache County is a county in the central part of the U.S. state of Colorado. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Saguache.
History
Saguache County was formed in 1866 from parts of the Costilla County and Lake County. Saguache means in the language of the Ute Indians, " Blue Earth " or " water on blue earth ".
Geography
The County is the Crestone Peak, on the edge of Custer County, which is also represented by the San Luis Valley. The Crestone Peak is the largest mountain in the so-called Crestones ( four " four thousand" Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, Kit Carson Mountain, Humboldt Peak). Another large collection is located south west of Salida (Colorado) Mount Ouray with 4,253 meters. The County is surrounded on the west clockwise from the Gunnison counties in the northwest and north, in the north of Chaffee, Fremont in the northwest, Custer in the east, in the southeast Huerfano, Alamosa and Rio Grande in the south in the southwest of Mineral and Hinsdale. In the county as well as in Alamosa County, the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
In the south of the county, the Baca National Wildlife Refuge ( wildlife reserve ). To the west of the county of Gunnison National Forest ( National Forest ).

According to the census of 2000, there were 5,917 people in the county. There were 2,300 households and 1,557 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 71.29 percent White, 0.12 percent Black or African American, 2.06 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.00 percent Pacific Islander residents from the 23.00 percent from other races, and groups; 3.08 percent were descended from two or more races. 45.26 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,300 households out of which 33.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers. 32.3 percent were non-families. 26.9 percent of all households and 7.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread from 28.4 percent population under 18 years, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 25,495, and the median income for a family was $ 29,405. Males had a median income of $ 25,158, women $ 18,862. The per capita income was $ 13,121. 22.6 percent of the population and 18.7 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 27.6 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 12.5 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
