Sahamalaza - Lemur ( Lepilemur sahamalazensis )

The Sahamalaza - Lemur ( Lepilemur sahamalazensis ) is a living primate in Madagascar from the group of lemurs within the lemurs. The species was first described in 2006.

Features

Sahamalaza - lemurs include a body length 19-20 cm, a tail length 21-26 cm and a weight of 0.6 to 0.8 kilogram to the smaller members of the lemurs. The coat color is variable and may depend on the age. The shoulders and arms are red-brown, as is the front part of the back, but towards the tail will go gray. The hind legs are gray, while the tail reddish brown or deep brown. The head is like all lemurs rounded, the forehead is reddish-brown, while the face gray. The eyes are larger than adaptation to the nocturnal lifestyle.

Dissemination and lifestyle

Sahamalaza - lemurs are so far known only from the Sahamalaza Peninsula in northwestern Madagascar. These animals live in forests, they can be found both in primary and in secondary forests.

Over the life of these newly discovered species, little is known. It is nocturnal and primarily holds up in the trees. Like all lemurs will love these animals sleep during the day in tree hollows or among the lush vegetation and walk alone at night in search of food. The food of the lemurs consists of leaves, fruit, buds and other plant parts.

Endangering

Sahamalaza - lemurs inhabit a small area, which however has been recently found under protection. About the threat to these newly discovered species can be no secure information make the IUCN lists them under "too little data available " ( data deficient ).
