The Saharan Atlas (Arabic الأطلس الصحراوي, DMG al -atlas aṣ - Sahrawi ) is the Atlas Mountains in North Africa belonging mountain range of about 950 kilometers in Morocco and Algeria. It forms a northern border of the Sahara.

North of it lies the highlands of the bulkhead, while south of it only desert is found. East winds around him the Tell Atlas mountain range and west limit it the Moroccan High Atlas mountain ranges and Djebel Sarhro.

Because of the desertic he is only viable and friendly settlement, where there is water in the form of oases or only sometimes water-bearing rivers desert wadis. The city of El Djelfa with approximately 235,000 (2005) inhabitants is the only major city in the mountains directly to over 1,100 meters above sea level. It is an important commercial hub for the nomads and semi- nomads of the Sahara. Few other cities can be found at its foot.

Its highest peak is Jebel Chelia with a height of 2,326 meters above sea level.
