Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam

Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (Hindi: साहिब बीबी और गुलाम, translated: Owner, Wife and slave ) is a Bollywood film released in 1962 The story is based on the eponymous book by Bimal Mitra. .

Action

Bengal end of the 19th century: Manjhle Babu and Chhote Sarkar, two brothers of the family have Choudhury, the Badi Haveli inherited. Chhote Chhoti Bahu is a beautiful low class woman, married. Nevertheless, they gained no attention from her husband, who, as it deserves for his stand, more like a maid treated. Every evening he plays with women and alcohol in a brothel, during which Chhoti remains lonely.

As Bhoothnath emerges, a middle-aged man who has traveled to Calcutta to look for work. He takes a job in the factory of Subinoy Babu and falls in love with his young daughter Jaba.

One night takes the staff of Chhote, Bansi, which is also related to Bhoothnath with him to Chhoti. Instant Bhoothnath is overwhelmed by her beauty and sadness and gives her the strength to not simply accept the way of life of her husband: He helps them regain her husband. Bhoothnath is her secret confidant.

Bhoothnath leaves the city to train as an architect. During this time Chhoti tries to recapture her husband. But Chhotis attempts are unsuccessful until they themselves reach for alcohol to have Chhote Sarkar with him.

A few years later Boothnath returns and is shocked by what they saw. Chhoti despair is addicted to alcohol, just as her husband. She asks Bhoothnath to accompany her to a temple to pray for her husband. Their conversation is overheard by her brother Manjhle Babu, who is beside himself with rage. So he orders a henchman Chhoti penalized because they joined with strange men outside the Choudhury family.

As Chhoti Bhoothnath and familiarize yourself with a cart on the road, the cart is stopped. Bhoothnath gets a shock and faints while Chhoti Bahu is kidnapped. After Bhoothnath wakes up in a hospital, he learns that Chhoti is gone and her husband is deceased. Bhoothnaths workers inform him that they had found a skeleton in the Badi Haveli. On the basis of the jewelery of the corpse Bhoothnath realizes that these are the mortal remains of Chhoti Bahu.

Background

The film was produced by Bimal Mitra's novel Saheb Bibi Golam from the year 1952. Role of Chhoti Bahu was originally supposed to play Nargis, but she was prevented by the birth of her son Sanjay. The film songs are sung by Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt and Hemant Kumar. The plot of the film is told as a flashback

Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam was India's candidate for the Academy Awards for 1963, but was not nominated.
