Sailmaker

A sailmaker manufactures, repairs and maintains sails, tarpaulins, spray hoods and covers for all types of sailing ships but also in other areas, see sunscreen sails, awnings and tents.

Sailmaker work in sailmakers and boat building companies, but also on board larger sailing ships. They continue to be employed by Interior farms where sunshades and awnings are manufactured. The activity contains a very high proportion of manual work, but it can hardly be accomplished even without the use of machinery today.

Sails are made in large workshops on a gridiron on which their outlines are torn open in full size. While the contours and edges marked earlier with strings ( " pinched " ) were, this process is now carried out with computer-aided plotters. An appropriate tailoring of the individual orbits of the sail can be given a three-dimensional profile. Then the sail panels are sewn together using special sewing machines. When sailing from modern synthetic materials (Mylar, Kevlar, laminate sailing) sewing was partially replaced by welding and bonding techniques. All sails shall then be fitted by the sailmakers with the " accessories ", with which they are later attached on board and served: Thimbles, Reff and leech tensioners, eyes, Cunningham, etc.

Sailmaker install sails, tarpaulins, canopies and awnings on site. They often take part in sailing and in particular in regattas to show the clients the optimal trim the sails of them custom built, or to make modifications to optimize the sail.

The job of a sail maker in Germany is a recognized profession by the Vocational Training Act ( Vocational Training Act) and the Crafts Code ( HwO ). The training takes place in the respective training company as well as the nationwide qualified professional school on the Priwall. It lasts three years.
