The first Sainsbury's store was opened in 1869 by John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann in Drury Lane in Holborn, London. 1922 J Sainsbury was set up as a private company. The IPO of J Sainsbury plc in 1973 was by then the largest on the London Stock Exchange. Today, the family owns an estimated 35 % of the shares.

1975 rose Sainsbury's along with BHSin the joint venture " Sainsbury's SavaCentre " in the self-service department store concept a. This was the first attempt to introduce supermarkets with a large non-food sector in the UK. 1989 Savacentre was taken over entirely by Sainsbury's. The self-service department store concept has become widely accepted in the UK, rivals such as ASDA and Tesco always open larger stores, so was " SavaCentre " incorporated into the supermarket sector.

In 1979, the Sainsbury's Homebase DIY store chain. Homebase has tripled its size to 1995 by including the competitors Texas Homecare bought by Ladbroke Group Plc. Sainsbury's Homebase sold in December 2000 for £ 969 million.

In November 1983, Sainsbury's acquired 21% of Shaw 's Supermarkets, the second largest grocery group in the northeastern United States, and in June 1987, the controlling majority. Despite good success of Shaw's, Sainsbury's sold the group on 30 April 2004.

In 1997, Sainsbury's Bank, a joint venture between J Sainsbury plc. and the Bank of Scotland, was founded.

In 2001, Sainsbury's moved into its new headquarters in Holborn, London. Sainsbury's had previously resided in Stamford House and 12 other buildings in Southwark. The building was designed by the architects Foster and Partners and was (now Accenture) built on the mirror - site of the Andersen Consulting Group.

Sainsbury's was once the market leader in the UK retail sector, but is currently locates behind Tesco and ASDA. The company has been catching up with a new business plan back. The group also includes real estate and financial companies. A separate company manages J Sainsburys land and property (eg shops ) and developed new ones. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and part of the UK FTSE 100 Index.

The Sainsbury Family

The Sainsbury family has since the withdrawal of David Sainsbury from the Executive no share in the operating business anymore, although they own about 35 % of the shares. Since entering David Sainsbury in the Blair government in 1998 its shares are managed in a trust fund, thereby a takeover of the group as good as impossible as it required the consent of the family, which is considered unlikely.
