Saint- Cergue is a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Saint- Cergue is located at 1,041 m above sea level. M., 9 km north- west of the district town of Nyon (air line). The village is located in a depression in above the Combe de CREVA Tsevau, at the height of the Jura, on the pass Col de la Givrine, east of La Dole.

The area of ​​24.3 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Jura. Parts of the site are under protection zone of Vaud Jurassic Park. The area extends on both sides of the Taleinschnitts Givrine in the Jura Mountains between La Dole in the south and the Mont Noir in the north. In the north of the municipality floor extends to the heights Fruitières de Nyon ( 1,330 m above sea level. M. ) and Combe Grasse ( 1,370 m above sea level. Population

With 2147 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Saint- CERGUE belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 86.1% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 4.9% and 4.2% in English (as of 2000). The population of Saint- CERGUE amounted in 1900 to 376 inhabitants. After 1960 (460 inhabitants ) continued a rapid increase in population with a quadrupling of the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

Economy

Saint- CERGUE was up to the beginning of the 20th century mainly coined by agriculture village. Today, agriculture with livestock and dairy farming, and forestry play only a marginal role as a source of income of the village population. Jobs are available in the local industry and especially in the service sector ( tourist area ). In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Tourism

Traffic

The community is easily accessible via. It lies on the main road from Nyon over the Col de la Givrine after Morez in France. The motorway connection Nyon on the A1 ( Geneva -Lausanne ) is about 12 km away from the resort. On 12 July 1916, the narrow- gauge railway from Nyon was taken to Saint - CERGUE in operation. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1110 under the name ecclesia Sancti Cyrici, in the 15th century appeared the spelling Saint- Cergues. Already at the beginning of the 12th century there was a church in Saint- CERGUE, which was under the Abbey of Saint -Claude. The village had strategic importance to the Col de la Givrine, who was committed brisk since the Middle Ages of traders and merchants. Under the protection of the Abbey family Thoire -Villars built in the 14th century a castle in Saint- CERGUE and gave the village certain tax freedoms.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Saint- CERGUE came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Nyon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Nyon.

Attractions

The present building of the church of Saint- CERGUE comes largely from the 19th century. Of the former castle (Vieux Château ), which was destroyed during the Burgundian War by the Confederates, small residues are still present.

The hotel Arbez is considered the only hotel in the world, which is in two states: one part on Swiss and French territory.
