History

A first mention of the village dates from the 4th century ( Sanctus Ferreolum ), but excavations around the church have finds brought to light that originate from Gallo-Roman times. In 600 the place is called Ferrolas, 683 as Sanctus Ferreolus.

Before the turn of the millennium Heribert, bishop of Auxerre, and half-brother of Hugh Capet had here a fortified hunting lodge. Later the place came into the possession of the house Toucy that this also lords of Puisaye were. 1250 married the Count of Bar, the heir to the Toucy. Jacques Cœur bought Saint- Fargeau 1450, but was in favor of him sentencing judge, Antoine de Chabannes, expropriated. This had rebuilt until his death in 1488, which led to political and legal battles with the heirs of Jacques Coeur's castle and town. 1515 Antoine married heiress René d'Anjou and Saint- Fargeau came into the possession of the line of Valois -Anjou to the royal family. Anne Marie Louise d' Orléans, duchesse de Montpensier, La Grande Mademoiselle, cousin of King Louis XIV, was exiled here in 1652; it was she who had run by Louis Le Vau, the great work on the Saint- Fargeau castle.

After the death of the Grande Mademoiselle, the Domaine went to several sales to the family Le Peletier, most notably the revolutionary politician Louis Michel Le Peletier. His heirs were a new wing before the castle by inheritance passed into the possession of the Ormesson family, who were in turn forced to sell it. Jean d' Ormesson grew up here in part and immortalized the castle in his novel Au plaisir de Dieu.
