Saint-Fons

Saint- Fons is a small French town with 17,032 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) on the outskirts of Lyon. Administratively it belongs to Arrondissement Lyon in the Rhône department in the Rhône- Alpes region and the Communauté urbaine de Lyon.

The municipality became independent in the 19th century, as a part of the municipal district of the neighboring town Vénissieux was separated. The most important role in the development of an independent city played the resident here chemical industry. So put Rhodia from 1912, cellulose acetate flakes that were used in paints and varnishes.

The city's name does not refer to a saint, but to the here sooner numerous occurring wells. The area was (German: Hundred Fountains ) cents fonts called, the name changed later to Saint- Fons. The inhabitants of the town called Saint- Foniards.

The German twin town of Saint- Fons is Kelkheim ( Taunus) in Frankfurt am Main. The Partnership was established on the outskirts of the already long-standing partnership between the cities of Lyon and Frankfurt.
