Saint-Gervais (Gard)

Saint- Gervais is a commune with 672 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard of the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Geography

Saint- Gervais is located four kilometers north-west of Bagnols -sur -Cèze and is crossed by the river Céze.

History

The place is named after one of the saints with the name Gervase. Even before the Romans began in Saint- Gervais the wine and olive production and the use of writing. As early as the 1st and 2nd centuries people lived in the region, especially from viticulture. The Romans exported the goods via the Rhône or the Romans road to Nimes. In the 9th century, the church of the village was built, it was extended again and again. Since 1871 there is in the Church a 10.5 -square-foot painting by Jacques Clément Wagrez.
