Saint Helier

Saint Helier ( Jèrriais: St Hélyi, named after Saint Helier ) is one of the twelve municipalities and the capital and largest town on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. Saint Helier is located on the south coast of Jersey, has a population of about 28,000 and is the administrative center of the island ( although Government House is situated in St. Saviour). The municipality covers about 10.6 square kilometers, which is about 9 % of the island surface.

History

Probably the first time was St. Helier settled during the Roman occupation of Gaul. Found the hoard of Grouville (English Grouville Hoard ), 2012 east of Saint Helier, is the largest hoard ever found in Western Europe and dates from the 1st century BC municipality and city are after perished in Jersey martyrs named Helier. The parish church, which is now at some distance from the shore, was originally built on the edge of the dunes. An abbey was founded in Saint Helier in 1155 at L' Islet, a land area that is at high water to the island. On the site of the closed during the Reformation abbey a castle was built, which replaced Mont Orgueil as the main attachment of the island. The new castle, Elizabeth Castle, was appointed by the Governor of Jersey 1600-1603, Sir Walter Raleigh to his Queen Elizabeth I. Under George II, the first port of the city was built. On January 6, 1781 fought in the Royal Square of the site the Battle of Jersey, which was the last attempt of French troops to conquer the island. Since the 1820s, a continuous influx of English settlers is recorded.

During the Second World War and Jersey was occupied by German troops. They cleared the island only a day after the official end of the war, namely on 9 May 1945. On the Liberation Square is a sculpture commemorating the occupation and liberation.

Policy

Saint Helier is divided into four electoral districts.

  • St Helier No. 1 ( Vingtaine de la Ville) elects three members
  • St Helier No. 2 ( Vingtaine de Bas du Mont au Prêtre and Vingtaine de Haut du Mont au Prêtre ) elects three members
  • St Helier No. 3 ( Vingtaine du Rouge Bouillon and Vingtaine du Mont à l' Abbé )
  • St Helier No. 4 ( Vingtaine du Mont Cochon )

The votes of the electoral districts 3 and 4 are added to a four-person constituency.

Since 1982 the French town of Avranches in Normandy sister city of Saint Helier, since 2002, the German town of Bad Wurzach in Baden- Württemberg, and in 2012 came as a third partner city of Funchal, capital of Madeira added.
