Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne

Saint -Jean -de- Maurienne is a commune with 8148 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Savoie and the Rhone-Alpes region.

Geography

Saint -Jean -de- Maurienne is located at the confluence of Arc, the river that has the Maurienne valley formed, and Arvan, which flows from the Arve valley down.

History

Saint -Jean -de- Maurienne is the capital of Maurienne, since the 6th century the holy Thekla brought from Egypt relics of John the Baptist (French Saint Jean -Baptiste ). In this period the city of Gontran, a grandson of Clovis became a bishopric was raised (see Bishopric of Saint -Jean -de- Maurienne ). In the year 753 came here Grifo, a son of Charles Martel, in a battle for life.

In 1857, the railway line was completed to Aix -les- Bains, which allowed a gradual industrialization of previously quite remote mountain region, 1860 was the place with the Duchy of Savoy finally to France.

Economy

The city lives of a factory, is produced in aluminum by electrolysis of alumina, as well as due to the near winter resorts of Alpine peaks and the Vanoise National Park tourism.
