Saint-Jean-de-Monts

Saint -Jean -de- Monts is a commune with 8196 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011), which is located on the Côte de Lumière in Vendée in the Pays de la Loire. Especially in the summer months the resort on the Atlantic coast is very well attended.

Geography

The city is located in the west of the département of Vendée between Notre -Dame-de -Monts and Saint- Hilaire -de- Riez, at the beginning of the Côte de Lumière. Saint -Jean -de- Monts is divided by a planted with pine dunes into two parts, which runs through the city from north to south. The heart of the city is located east of the dunes, while the sea shore lies west of it; the two parts are separated by at least 200 meters wide forest and only connected by hiking trails and some avenues.

The beach is the magnet of the city and enjoys due to its length of eight kilometers, its free accessibility and the low wave height an excellent reputation. In fact, the sea behaves mostly calm and is growing only slowly due to the very weak rising sand dunes that begin in shallow water. In a strong tide the sea pulls back very far and provides for athletes of all kinds and for fishermen on foot an ideal place.

The Swamps ( Marais ) and the forest belong to the ecological attractions, not least as a contrast to the real estate that arose in the 1960s and 1970s.
