Saint-Jeoire

Saint- Jeoire is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. To avoid confusion with Saint- Jeoire - Prieuré, the name Saint- Jeoire -en- Faucigny is often used, but this is no longer officially since 1860. Saint- Jeoire is the capital of the canton of Saint- Jeoire in the arrondissement of Bonneville.

Geography

Saint- Jeoire is located at 580 m above sea level. M., approximately 25 km east-southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village extends Faucigny, in a wide valley in the Vallée du cracks, between the peaks of Môle in the south and the Pointe des Brasses in the north, in the Savoy Alps.

History

Various finds ( including a stone and a bronze ax ) indicate a settlement of the area of Saint- Jeoire in proto -historic times, in the Neolithic period and during the Roman period. A noble family of Saint- Jeoire appears for the first time in 1185 in the documents. In the Middle Ages Saint- Jeoire belonged to the field of rule Faucigny. As part of the Dauphiné reached the place in 1349 to France, but was delivered in a country Abtausch to the Counts of Savoy under the Treaty of Paris in 1355.
