Saint-Junien

Saint- Junien is a French town with 11,506 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Vienne in the Limousin region. It belongs to the Local Government Association, Vienne- Glane and the two cantons of Saint- Junien -Est and Saint -Junien -Ouest, whose capital it is.

Geography

Saint- Junien is located in the Périgord -Limousin Regional Nature Park, 29 kilometers north- west of Limoges. The Rivière Vienne, the Glane and the Goire flow through the municipality.

History

Saint- Junien is named after a hermit who is said to have lived in the 6th century in a cave. In the 10th century an abbey was erected on his grave. In the 11th century city wall was built. From the 11th century Saint- Junien was a stronghold of the Glover, tawer and felt making. The Bishop of Limoges was in the 13th century seigneur of the village and gave her 1254 city rights ( liberté communale ).

Twinning

Saint- Junien maintains three twinning. Since 2001, a partnership with the Polish town Żukowo, since 1970 a partnership with the Belgian town of Jumet, which now belongs to Charleroi, and since 2000 with the German town Wendelstein.

Culture and sights

Saint- Junien is nationally represented by three flowers in the Conseil des villes et villages fleuris ( National Council of flowery towns and villages ). The " flowers " are awarded as part of a regional competition, a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Economy

The municipal area controlled designation of origin (AOC ) butter ( Beurre Charentes -Poitou, Beurre des Charentes and Beurre des Deux Sevres ) and protected geographical indication ( PGI ) for Veal ( Veau du Limousin ), lamb ( Agneau du Limousin and Agneau du Poitou apply -Charentes ), Pork ( Porc du Limousin ), ham ( Jambon de Bayonne ) and wine (Haute -Vienne blanc, rosé or rouge ).
