Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque
Saint -Laurent -de- la- Salt marsh ( Occitan: Sant Llorenç de la Salanca ) is a commune with 9014 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Pyrénées- Orientales in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.
Location
Saint -Laurent -de- la- Salt marsh is located just five kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea (Le Barcarès ) and only about two kilometers south of the Etang de Leucate. Distance to Perpignan is about 15 km ( driving distance ) in a southwesterly direction.
Demographics
In the first census in 1793, the place had over 1600 inhabitants. In the 19th century, the population increased to over 5,000. Immediately after the Second World War, the city counted just over 3000 inhabitants.
Economy
In the coastal region of the Rosselló ( Roussillon ) is operated to a limited extent agriculture and viticulture. However, the swimming, surfing and sailing tourism and rental cottages ( gîtes ) plays the biggest role in the economic life of the village.
History
The first mention of the village dates back to the year 981 (Villa Sancti Laurenti ). Back then, the salt water marshes ( salanques ) enclosed place - such as the whole region of Roussillon - the county of Barcelona, and later to the Crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of Mallorca. Since the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659 ), the Roussillon is French. The present town of Saint- Laurent -de- la- Salanque emerged only in 1929 after the spin-off of Le Barcarès.

Attractions
The in recent decades has grown enormously place offers no attractions. Trips to the Mediterranean or to the Etang de Leucate or - in other direction - in the mountains of the hinterland offer a little variety. The fort of Salses is only about ten kilometers north-west direction away.
