Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres

Saint -Laurent -des- Arbres is a commune with 2587 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Geography

The community is located about fifteen kilometers north- west of Avignon and about forty kilometers northeast of the sub-prefecture of Nîmes. Saint -Laurent -des- Arbres is on the right bank of the Rhone River and is part of the vineyard Côtes du Rhône Villages.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint -Laurent -des- Arbres are Laudun- l'Ardoise in the north, Saint- Geniès -de- Comolas in the east, in the southeast Roquemaure, Tavel in the south and Saint -Victor- la -Coste in the West.

History and Culture

By the 10th century it belonged to a private gentlemen, who gave him the year 919 the bishop of Avignon. At that time the place was in an enclave of the diocese of Avignon. In the 14th century Romanesque church was a fixture as a protection against possible attacks. As early as 1892 the church was declared a monument historique.

In town is the tour Jacques Deuze, a tower, which originated in the 12th century. It was expanded in the early 14th century. In the vicinity of this tower is the tour Ribas, a tower Romanesque style. It was built in the 11th century and is only partially received today.

The Lavoir of Saint -Laurent -des- Arbres dates from the year 1866. It measures 14 x 2.50 meters and has a capacity of 21,000 liters.
