Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral (Azbakeya)

The Coptic Orthodox Saint Mark's Cathedral in Cairene district Azbakeya was from 1800 to 1971 the seat of the Coptic Pope.

Because of the influential position of the Copts Ibrahim El- Gohary in government and his great pleasure at the Muslim rulers he was capable to adopt fatwas that it approved Copts to build churches and monasteries destroyed again. This was of particular importance, as it was by then Copts are not allowed to build new churches or renovate old churches, as long as they received no official government approval - which was very rarely granted.

One of the first churches which he built, is the Coptic Orthodox Saint Mark's Cathedral in Azbakeya in the Egyptian capital Cairo, which was completed by his brother and consecrated in 1800 by Pope Mark VIII. From then on, the cathedral served until 1971 as the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria.

Ibrahim El- Gohary also donated many foundations for Gutsländer and money to rebuild and came to 238 endowments, which is documented in the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate.
