Saint Mary Church (Haret Elroum)

The St. Mary's Church of Harat ar-Rum or al - Adhra -al- Mughitha Church is a Coptic Orthodox church in a street Harat ar-Rum in Cairene Elghoureya near the St. Theodore's Nunnery.

The church was used 1660-1800 as the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria. This occurred when Pope Matthias IV on his first day as Coptic Pope the seat of the Church of the Virgin Mary in Haret Zuweila moved to St. Mary's Church. He remained there until 1800, when the Pope Mark VIII moved him to the Coptic Saint Mark's Cathedral Azbakeya.

It is also the burial site for some of the Coptic Popes. The St. Mary's Church of Harat ar-Rum warden had rebuilt several times, and in 1794 renovated the Copt Ibrahim El- Gohary, the church, but it was during the papal reign of Pope Mark VIII ( 1797-1809 ) burned down. Today, the church would need to be renovated again.
