Saint-Maurice-de-Gourdans

Saint- Maurice -de- Gourdans is a commune with 2475 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ain ​​, in the Rhône -Alpes. It belongs to the arrondissement Bourg -en- Bresse, the Canton Meximieux and community association Plaine de l' Ain.

Geography

The community is located at the mouth of the Rhône in Ain in the landscape Côtière south of the Dombes, located around 30 kilometers from Lyon.

At Saint- Maurice include the districts of Le Ronger and Pollet and the hamlet Girondol.

History

The village was built around the millennium as Saint- Maurice- d'Anthon, when people settled around a monastery. So also Charnoz -sur- Ain and Saint -Jean -de- Niost emerged. In the 11th and 12th century, the church was built. Originally the village was owned by the Lords of Anthon on the other Rhône page. The hamlets of the time, still bear their original names: L' Orme, Le Zonchet, Le Ronger, Le Content, Le Plan and Pollet. 1285 the community has established a fiefdom of Savoy, which was dependent on the barons of Gourdans. The village, which was partly dependent on Savoy and Dauphiné went 1595 into the possession of the Kingdom of France. Between 1350 and the 17th century, the village flourished. The Autumn Fair, which attracted people from all over the region, was responsible for the prosperity. The population rose from 245 in 1440 to 1,000 inhabitants before the French Revolution. The village also silkworms were bred for the needs of Lyon. Up to 2857 mulberry trees there were in this place. After 1870, conflicts over municipal boundaries and the nearby military camp to problems for the place were. In the 1880s there was again an economic boom due to the positive development in the Lyon area.
