Saint -Maximin- la -Sainte -Baume has seen a remarkable increase in population in the last quarter of the 20th century and especially in the 1980s. Between 1962 and 2006, the population has more than quintupled.

Attractions

Saint- Maximin is primarily known for the Basilica of Ste -Marie- Madeleine de Saint -Maximin- la -Sainte -Baume, which is the largest Gothic church in Provence. This is also one of the greatest Baroque organs of France, which was created in 1773 by the monk Isnard and attracts music lovers from all over the world. Under the cathedral in a crypt is said to be the grave of Mary Magdalene.
