Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne

Saint -Michel- de -Maurienne is a commune with 2681 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes region near the French-Italian border and is owned by the community association Communauté de communes Maurienne Galibier on.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Maurienne between the Col du Galibier and the Col des Encombres in the valley of the River Arc. In the vicinity are known ski resorts such as Valloire, Valmeinier ( domaine Galibier Thabor ), Orelle and Trois Vallées.

The railway accident of 1917

On 12-13. December 1917 occurred in the vicinity of Saint -Michel- de -Maurienne one of the most momentous railway accidents worldwide and by far the most serious of the French railway history, as is dealt with through nearly 1,000 French soldiers military train on the railway line Culoz - Modane valley went out of control and with excessive speed derailed.
