Saint-Paul-de-Varces

Saint -Paul -de- Varces is a commune with 2240 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Isère, in the Rhône -Alpes. It belongs to the community association Grenoble -Alpes- Métropole.

Geography

Saint -Paul -de- Varces lies in the east of France in the French Alps, 99 kilometers south-east of Lyon and 15 kilometers south-west of Grenoble. Neighboring municipalities of Saint -Paul -de- Varces are Lans -en- Vercors Mountains in the northwest, Varces - Allières -et- Risset in the northeast, southeast and Vif in Villard -de- Lans in the West. The municipal area covers 1969 hectares, the average altitude is 1170 meters above sea level, the Mairie stands at a height of 401 meters.

Saint -Paul -de- Varces is a climate of type Cfb ( according to Köppen and Geiger ) assigned: Warm Temperate rain climate ( C ), fully wet ( f), the warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C ( b). There is a maritime climate with moderate summer.

History

The municipality was from the Chalcolithic period ( 4300 BC to 2200 BC ) continually inhabited until the early history. Excavations have found a necropolis of the Bronze Age ( 3rd millennium BC to the 1st millennium BC).

During the French Revolution, the church was renamed Ancoin and Paul d'Ancoin. Already in 1793 but it was again called Saint Paul de Varces and got 1801 Saint -Paul -de- Varces the right to local self-government.

The present church of Saint -Paul was built in 1840. In the square on which the original church had stood, which was destroyed by a landslide. The old church had belonged to the Knights Templar. On a wall surface, a window with a pointed arch of the old church is still preserved.

The lowest population was at Saint -Paul -de- Varces 1936, after which the population rose steadily until 1975 and then by leaps and bounds.
