Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis

Saint -Paul -Saint -Louis is a city built in the years 1627 to 1641 parish church in Paris ( 4th arrondissement ). Her style matches that of the Jesuit churches.

History

1619 gave King Louis XIII. the Jesuits after their premises in the Palais Rochepot had become too small for the site of the present church. From 1627 to 1641 the church was built under the direction of the Jesuit architect Étienne François Martellange and Derand. It is strongly oriented to the mother church of the Jesuits, the Gesù in Rome. It was dedicated to Saint- Louis.

After the inauguration in 1641 under Cardinal Richelieu, the Church, in particular the proclamation of the Word of God was at the center, enjoyed great popularity. After the violent expulsion of the Jesuits under Louis XV. in 1762 the church orphaned. After the Concordat of 1801, she received in 1802, in memory of the destroyed during the Revolution Church of St- Paul -des- Champs, the double patronage St- Paul -St- Louis and took over the task of the parish church.

Architecture and Home Affairs

The Church strongly reminiscent of their model of the Gesù, but it also mix many elements of French building traditions in, for example, the 60 m high dome right. The facade is influenced in its structure and Ornate strong awareness of the Italian style.

Particularly worth seeing is the Pieta inside the Renaissance sculptor Germain Pilon and a painting by Eugène Delacroix: Christ in the olive grove.

Organ

The great organ was built in 1871 by organ builder Narcisse Martin. The instrument has 40 stops on three manuals and pedal. The play and Registertrakturen are electric.
