Saint-Pierre-des-Corps

Saint- Pierre -des-Corps is a city on the Loire, with 15,260 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). It is located in central France in the department of Indre -et -Loire of the Centre region, about three kilometers east from the city center of Tours, between the Loire and Cher. It is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of the same name. The inhabitants call themselves Corpopétrussiens.

Geography

As banlieue of Tours, the place is an important junction on the rail network (LGV Atlantique and railway line Paris - Bordeaux). In the north, bordering the municipality of Rochecorbon, to the east by La Ville- aux -Dames, on the southeast by Larçay, south to Saint- Avertin and to the west Tours.

History

A Bronze Age settlement is archaeologically detectable within the municipal area.

During the French Revolution the place of the name La Clarté Républicaine was given. With the industrialization of the 19th century the city also experienced an economic boom. After the Second World War, which left considerable damage in the city, the population grew to more than 10,000 inhabitants, reaching the early 1980s, with more than 18,000 a peak.
