Saint Publius

Publius ( maltes.: Publju ) (. † angebl to 112 in Malta ) was, according to legend the first Bishop of Malta. His historical existence is not assured.

Christianity in Malta can only reliably determine from the 4th century. However, the tradition sees a continuous tradition that dates back to the shipwreck of St. Paul on Malta, which is described in the book of Acts. It is mentioned, whose father was Paul of fever and dysentery healed (Acts 28.7 EU) by a prefect Publius. Another tradition sees in a Publius bishop of Athens, who had suffered martyrdom under the Emperor Trajan.

The Church of Floriana in Valletta is dedicated to Saint Publius, who is revered as a saint of the village as well as the island of Malta.

The feast of Saints is the 21st of January.
