Saint Stepanos Monastery

The monastery of Saint Stephanos (Armenian Սուրբ Ստեփանոս վանք ) is an Armenian Apostolic monastery and is located in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan, about 15 km north- west of the city Dscholfa. In 2008, the Monastery of San Stephanos was appointed along with other Armenian monasteries in Iran by the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The monastery was built in the 9th century in a deep ravine near the river Aras, which now forms the border with Azerbaijan. During the Safavid Dynasty, it was destroyed by earthquakes several times and rebuilt.
