Saint Titus

Titus (Greek Άγιος Τίτος, Agios Titos = holy Titus in Crete † 105 ), which is referred to in the Bible as a disciple of the Apostle Paul, was the first bishop of Crete, and is the patron saint of the Cretan church. He was later counted among the seventy disciples of Jesus. His life data are unknown, the early church to legend, he died around 105 AD with about 94 years on Crete.

Life

Titus is mentioned in the genuine letters of Paul several times. These letters can be reconstructed with relative certainty that Titus was a Gentile Christian, Paul was able to successfully support in particular on sensitive tasks. So Titus accompanied Paul to the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem. He was also probably involved in defusing the crisis in Corinth, when Paul and the Corinthian church were quarreling. Finally, Titus Paul was commissioned to collect the collection of communities

From the Titus, whose details but are not historically reliable, it appears that Titus is said to have later worked as a missionary in Crete. According to Timothy Titus missionary in Illyria. According to tradition, he was the first bishop of Gortyn in Crete.

Although Titus Paul is praised as a reliable employee, missing a mention of Titus in the Acts. This has been explained so far unconvincing. Hypotheses such as that Titus was a brother of Luke or Timothy and Titus is identical with 've worn two names remain speculative.

Cretan tradition

According to the Orthodox tradition Titus was born in Crete and is a descendant of the mythical King Minos. He came from a wealthy family, a relative was the Roman governor of the island Rustillo. He traveled to Jerusalem and was witness of the sufferings of Christ. Later, as Bishop of Crete, he founded the nine dioceses Knossos, Ierapitna, Cydonia, Hersonissos, Eleutherna, Lampi, Kisamos, Kantanos and Gortyna.

In Gortyn he built a church bishop and after his death he was buried there. There Agios Titos church was built in the 6th century, the ruins of which are still preserved. 961 AD Chandakas island's capital. Therefore there a new main church was built and transferred the remains of Titus there. The church was destroyed several times and rebuilt. A fire in 1544 only the head of Titus could be saved from destruction. 1669, after the Turks conquered the city, the relic was brought to Venice and did not return until May 15, 1966.
