Saint-Vit

Saint -Vit is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté. It is with respect to population, the largest municipality in the canton Boussières and seat of the Communauté de communes du Val Saint- Vitois.

Geography

Saint -Vit is at 221 m, approximately 18 km west-southwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located at the northern edge of the valley of the Doubs, in the gently undulating countryside between the rivers of Doubs and Ognon ( in the north).

The area of ​​16.44 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals. The southern boundary runs along the Doubs, which here flows through a 1 km wide Talniederung to the west. The river is channeled and also includes the Rhine - Rhone canal. From the river, the municipality's area extends northward over the flat alluvial plain to the adjacent, slightly undulating countryside between Doubs and Ognon. The area is mainly used for arable and meadow land, partly it is passed with forest. To the east of the municipality spell Covering a vast forest area of ​​the Bois d' Ambre and the little valley of the Ringeard ( short right side of the creek Doubs). With 302 m is reached on a hill northwest of the village is the highest elevation of Saint -Vit.

History

The municipality of Saint -Vit was crossed by the Roman road that led from Vesontio (Besançon ) to Cabillonum ( Chalon -sur -Saône ). In a necropolis of the 6th century, numerous pieces of jewelry, tools, and Roman coins have been found. The name Saint -Vit, which dates back to the Roman martyrs Vitus, was first mentioned in the 10th century. Since the Middle Ages formed Saint -Vit an ecclesiastical rule, which was under the cathedral chapter of Besançon. Together with the Franche-Comté reached Saint -Vit with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

Attractions

The village church of Saint -Vit, originally from the 10th century, was extensively rebuilt in 1740, only the choir room from the old building from the 13th century has survived. With 4763 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint -Vit is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the area of ​​850-1050 people, a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1950s. Since then the population has quadrupled and outside the village numerous single and multi- family houses were created.

Economy and infrastructure

Saint -Vit has long been a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. Since the 19th century it developed into a small center on the main road between Besancon and Dole. It has a well-developed infrastructure, and thus performs central functions for the agricultural hinterland.

Since the 1970s, commercial and industrial zones were created on the outskirts along the main road.
