Sainte-Catherine-lès-Arras

Sainte -Catherine is a commune with 3406 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Pas -de- Calais, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It belongs to the district of Arras and to canton Dainville.

History

The historical name of the place was Demencourt ( as " Dominica curtis " occupied in the year 752 ). In the 13th century, the name of the parish of Sainte -Catherine also became a place name. Historically, the place belonged since the Middle Ages to the County of Artois and shared their rich history. Since the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659 the place belongs permanently to France. The Act of 22 December 1789 the management reorganization of France, the settlement came as the town of Sainte -Catherine to the newly formed department of Pas -de -Calais. During the First World War, the region was the scene of fierce fighting and lossy material battles.

Geography

The nearest towns are Saint- Nicolas ( approx. 1,1 km as the crow flies) and Anzin -Saint -Aubin ( about 1.7 km), the cantonal capital Dainville is about 3.9 km, and the district capital of Arras about 1, 8 km away.

Attractions

Worth seeing are the Croix de Demencourt ( Way of the Cross ) from the 15th century, the Église de Sainte- Catherine ( Church of St. Catherine ) with organ (1868 Brothers pride, renewed 1968 by Rene Godefroy ) and a malt house from the year 1868.
