Sainte-Croix-sur-Orne

Sainte -Croix- sur -Orne is a commune with 80 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Orne in Basse-Normandie region.

Geography

Saint- Croix- sur -Orne is located on the right bank of the Orne, on the edge of the reservoir of Rabodanges. The community is located 21 km north-east of Flers.

Etymology

1150 the place was called Sancta Crux. The name component Croix denotes certainly a Christian cross.

Culture and sights

The Manoir

The mansion, which is located near the church, was built in the mid 15th century by François d' Osmond. This is the coat of arms on the front door. The building has two round towers.

The Old Bridge of Sainte -Croix

The Bridge of Sainte -Croix was about a hundred meters long, but was only space for one car. The remains of the destroyed during the Second World War Gothic bridge disappeared by damming the River Orne. On the central pillar of the bridge there was a Calvary, which was also destroyed. Later, a Calvary was on a farm in Putanges -Pont- Écrepin discovered, given that the community and was blessed on May 5, 1985.

Chapel of Saint -Roch

The cult of Saint Roch was born as a result of various Pestwellen the Middle Ages. The construction of this chapel, however, was begun in 1867. The Romanesque chapel has six stained glass windows and the altar, a former church in Briouze.

The Church

The village church is surrounded by a small cemetery. In the 19th century it was rebuilt. It has an altar of 1745, which in 1920 was re- painted.

The lime

In the hamlet Le Cul de Chaudron is a lime kiln, which probably gave the hamlet its name.

There are also in Sainte -Croix- sur -Orne a renovated Lavoir.

Demographics

In the town there are two farms. To this end, the village of a few people, including the English, used as a country residence.
