Sainte-Suzanne (Doubs)

Sainte -Suzanne is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Sainte -Suzanne is at 318 m, about two kilometers west of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located on the western edge of the basin of Montbéliard in the valley of the Allan north of Doubstals, on the northern edge of the outermost ridges of the Jura.

The area of ​​1.59 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Allantals. The eastern boundary runs along the Allan, drawing a sharp bend here and changes its flow direction from west to south. In the flat Talniederung, which has a width of about a kilometer, are the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone Canal, an industrial canal. From the river, the municipality's area extends westward across the flood plain and a steep 50 to 80 m high slope down to the adjoining plateau of the Bois Georges, on the 405 meters, the highest elevation of Sainte -Suzanne is achieved.

Neighboring municipalities of Sainte -Suzanne are Montbéliard in the north, Courcelles- lès -Montbéliard in the east, the south and beard manure and Allondans in the West.

History

Remains of vases, jewelry and coin finds indicate a settlement of the area of Sainte -Suzanne in Gallo-Roman times. The origin of the town goes back to the Carolingian period, as a monk of the Abbey of Luxeuil in a cave chapel Sainte -Suzanne founded here. In addition, the same village evolved with time. Since the Middle Ages belonged to the county of Sainte- Suzanne Montbéliard. With the occupation of that county, the village came in 1793 final in French hands.

Already in the middle of the 18th century, Sainte -Suzanne developed into a location of industry and commerce. Industrialization began with the founding of a cotton and Indiennemanufaktur. Further expansion saw the village in the 19th century, when in 1839 the game cannery by Auguste l' Épée began operations. She was the only one of its kind in France and exported musical boxes in the world until its closure in 1996. 1852 founded Édouard Sahler a modern spinning mill, and in 1880 was added a weaving mill. The mill was taken over in 1895 by Edmond Courant and worked until 1955 under the name Courant Sahler jr. further. Shortly after 1902 a foundry was established, which is still in operation today. Today, Sainte -Suzanne is part of the community association Communauté d' Agglomà du Pays de Montbéliard.

Attractions

The Church of Sainte -Suzanne stands on the site of the Carolingian chapel was built from 1745 to 1747. It has a rich interior from the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the natural attractions include the cave below a steep rock face and the associated source ( taken as well).

Population

With 1520 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Sainte -Suzanne is one of the smaller communities of the department of Doubs. After beginning of the 20th century, a slow but steady increase in population was recorded (1901 were 940 individuals counted ), the previous record high of just over 1500 inhabitants has already been reached at the beginning of the 1960s. This was followed by a decrease in population by about 17 % until 1990. Since then is again an increasing trend to watch. Today, the settlement area of Sainte -Suzanne with those of Montbeliard Courcelles -lès -Montbéliard and beard has grown together.

Economy and infrastructure

Sainte -Suzanne since the early 18th century was shaped by an industrial and commercial community. Today, the steel foundry include F.W.F. the group Aciéries Fonderies et de l'Est and the SA Grand Jean, who specializes in the micro-mechanics, boiler construction and sheet metal processing, the most important employers in Sainte -Suzanne. There are also numerous shops of retail. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the agglomeration Montbéliard.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road N463 that runs from Montbéliard to L' Isle- sur -le- Doubs and continue to Besançon. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 6 km. Further road links exist with manure, Allondans and Courcelles -lès -Montbéliard.
