Saïx

Saïx ( Sais Occitan ) is a commune with 3318 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Tarn in the Midi-Pyrénées region. It is located in the arrondissement of Castres, in the canton Castres- Ouest.

Geography

Saïx is located near the Monts du sSidobre and the Montagne Noire, on the south bank of the River Agout, a tributary of the Tarn, about 5.5 km west- southwest of Castres, 59 km east from Toulouse and 37 km south of Albi.

History

The place name derives from the Latin saxum ( rocks ). The municipality comprises the towns of Saïx and Longuegineste.

In the 12th century, the area was in and around Saïx under the rule of the Benedictines of Castres. Both in the Hundred Years War and in the war of religion 1563-1568 Saïx was destroyed several times. The castle was razed in 1582.
