Sajama Province

Sajama is a province in the northwestern part of the Oruro Department in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Sajama province is one of sixteen provinces in the Oruro Department. It lies between 17 ° 39 'and 18 ° 39' south latitude and between 67 ° 38 ' and 68 ° 45 ' west longitude.

It is bounded on the northwest by the Department of La Paz, on the west by the Republic of Chile, to the southwest by the province of Atahuallpa, to the southeast by the province of Litoral, to the east by the province Carangas, and on the northeast by the province of San Pedro de Totora.

The province extends over a length of 120 kilometers in north-south direction and 135 km in east-west direction.

Population

The population of the province, Sajama has risen in the past two decades by about a fifth:

43.4 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. 90.4 percent of the population speak Aymara, Spanish 88.6 percent and 4.2 percent Quechua.

97.0 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 90.8 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

68.2 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 0.3 percent in mining, 5.4 percent in industry, 26.1 percent in the service sector ( 2001).

66.1 percent of the population are Catholics, 26.9 percent are Protestant (1992).

The province is divided into the following two counties ( bolivian: municipios ):

  • Municipio de Curahuara Carangas - 6,514 inhabitants (Update 2010)
  • Municipio Turco - 3,718 inhabitants
