Sakai Project

Sakai is an open source learning environment, which is supported by an extensive community and is an alternative to various commercial learning space systems. The software is Java based and has been developed with the aim to withstand the comparison with commercial system in all aspects.

The project was launched in 2004 and has its origins in open source projects, the University of Michigan and Indiana University. Later came to these developers, MIT and Stanford University added. In addition to this team, the framework and core tools of the system is implemented, there are currently about 80 other international universities that participate in the Sakai Educational Partners Program ( SEPP ).

In Sakai can be distinguished on a technical level, two components: The Sakai framework and the Sakai tools. While the Sakai framework provides the basic functions of the learning space system, additional functions can be implemented and integrated with Sakai tools. Traditional tools such as a discussion board, a gradebook or a tool for electronic exams " Sakai Test & Quizzes ". The open interfaces, it is possible for each user to implement their own tools for individual requirements. There may be multiple solutions exist, as is the case for example in the discussion board for a use case well.

At university level, a comprehensive community has formed in recent years, led by our own needs and experience different parts contributing to the overall system. At regularly scheduled meetings will be held a lively exchange between the participants. Besides a large number of American conferences are in Lübeck the European Sakai Day.
